Video settings

The video settings are designed to control the app-wide look and feel of video elements across the shop, ensuring consistent and responsive display. These settings can be applied universally or customized at the section or block level, enhancing the visual appeal and functionality of the shop.

Key components include the video service URL, which allows embedding videos from YouTube or Vimeo, and the Shopify-hosted video option for using videos hosted directly on the platform. The video poster image setting lets you select an image to display as the first frame of your video, providing a visual cue before playback.

The aspect ratio and aspect ratio for mobile settings determine the shape of the video display, with options like landscape, portrait, and widescreen. The maximum video width controls the video's width in pixels, while the autoplay video, loop video, mute video, and show video player controls settings offer additional customization for video playback.

Usage examples include embedding promotional videos on your homepage, showcasing product demonstrations with hosted videos, and adjusting aspect ratios for optimal mobile viewing. These settings provide flexibility and control, allowing for a tailored and engaging user experience.

The video settings control the app-wide look and feel of video elements across the shop. These settings ensure that videos are displayed consistently and responsively, enhancing the visual appeal and functionality of the shop. They can be applied universally but also allow for customization at the section or block level.

Key components and functionality #

Video service URL

This setting allows you to specify the URL of a video from YouTube or Vimeo to be displayed. It accepts direct video URLs, not embed codes. The default URL is _https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VUPq3SxOc.

Shopify-hosted video

This option enables the use of videos hosted directly on the platform. Consider the size and bitrate of the video to ensure optimal performance.

Video poster image

This setting allows you to select an image that will be displayed as the first frame of your video. It is recommended to use this feature when utilizing hosted videos to provide a visual cue before the video starts playing.

Aspect ratio

The aspect ratio setting determines the shape of the video display. Options include:

  1. Default
  2. Landscape
  3. Portrait
  4. Square
  5. Ultrawide
  6. Widescreen

The default setting is default.

Aspect ratio for mobile

This option allows you to specify the video shape specifically for mobile devices. The available options are the same as the desktop aspect ratio, with the default being default. This setting is useful when you might consider using a different aspect ratio for mobile to ensure optimal viewing on smaller screens.

Maximum video width

This setting controls the maximum width of the video in pixels. The range is from 0 to 1600 pixels, with a step of 16 pixels. Setting the value to 0 will stretch the video to the full available width. The default is 0.

Autoplay video

This checkbox enables the video to start playing automatically when the page loads. This feature can enhance user engagement but should be used judiciously to avoid overwhelming visitors.

Loop video

When enabled, this setting allows the video to replay automatically once it reaches the end.

Mute video

This checkbox mutes the video by default when it starts playing. The default setting is true.

Show video player controls

This setting determines whether the video player controls (such as play, pause, and volume) are displayed to the user. The default setting is true.

Usage examples #

  1. Promotional Videos: You might consider embedding a promotional video from YouTube or Vimeo on your homepage. Set the aspect ratio to widescreen for a cinematic effect and enable autoplay to capture visitors' attention immediately.

  2. Product Demonstrations: Hosting a video directly on the platform can showcase a product in action. Use a video poster image to display a high-quality image of the product before the video starts, ensuring a seamless transition.

  3. Responsive Design: Adjust the aspect ratio for mobile to portrait to ensure videos are displayed optimally on smaller screens, enhancing the mobile shopping experience.

These settings provide flexibility and control over how videos are presented, allowing for a tailored and engaging user experience.
