Footer layout settings
Use these settings to shape how a footer item fits into the overall footer arrangement. They are especially useful when you want cleaner grouping, better spacing, or a clearer visual hierarchy across the footer. For broader context on how these settings are managed in the editor, see Shopify documentation on the theme editor
Layout settings
Section titled “Layout settings”These controls affect how a footer item flows next to other footer content. You can use them to let an item expand into extra horizontal space, begin a separate column, or move onto a new row. For a broader overview of how theme content is organized, see Shopify documentation on sections and blocks
Fill available space is best for content that benefits from extra width, such as longer text or areas that would otherwise leave awkward gaps. It helps one item take up remaining room in the row so the footer feels more balanced.
Fill available space only changes the desktop layout. Check larger screens when reviewing its effect.
Show in new column starts the item in a separate vertical grouping. Use this when you want clearer separation between different types of footer content, such as links, contact details, or brand information.
Show in new row gives an item stronger separation by moving it below the current row. This is useful when a footer item should feel distinct from the items above it instead of sharing the same horizontal line.
When deciding between these options, think about reading flow first. Starting a new column or row changes how the footer is scanned, while filling available space mainly changes how strongly an item anchors the layout.
For more detail on how these layout controls are intended to work, see the layout settings reference.
Usage notes
Section titled “Usage notes”- Group similar content. Start a new column when you want footer items to read as separate groups instead of one continuous cluster.
- Use extra width with purpose. Let an item fill available space only when wider content improves balance or readability.
- Reserve new rows for stronger separation. Move an item to a new row when it should sit clearly beneath the main footer content.
- Review both viewports. Desktop and mobile controls can produce different layout, alignment, visibility, or media behavior, so check both screen sizes before you finish.
- Keep the footer easy to scan. Too many forced row and column breaks can make the footer feel fragmented.
- Watch customer flow. Reordered or hidden navigation items can change what visitors can reach, especially when footer links feed into menus, drawers, or mobile-only controls.
