Use the Row block to add a single collapsible item to an accordion. It works well for FAQs, shipping details, care instructions, policy summaries, or any other content that should stay available without taking up too much space.
You can enter content directly in the block or pull it from existing content. For a broader feature reference, see the accordion block guide. For a Shopify overview of how blocks work in the theme editor, see Shopify documentation on sections and blocks
Core settings
Section titled “Core settings”The main settings shape the row’s content and behavior. You can control whether the row starts open, add a custom heading, include an optional heading icon, and decide whether the body uses manual rich text or linked content.
If you assign both a blog post and a page, the page overrides the blog post. That makes the page setting a good choice when you want a quick replacement without changing the rest of the block.
When using linked content, the excerpt option is helpful if you want a shorter summary instead of the full body copy. This works best when excerpts are already written clearly and consistently. For setup details on connected content, see Shopify documentation on metafields and dynamic sources. For more on excerpts, see Excerpts.
Use the block’s own content field when you need full control over wording and formatting. Use linked content when you want the row to stay synced with content you already maintain elsewhere.
Buttons and links
Section titled “Buttons and links”You can add a manual button, or automatically show a link to the linked content. The automatic link is useful when the row acts as a preview, while a manual button gives you more control over the destination and call to action.
Choose a button style that matches the importance of the action. Full-width buttons on mobile can be easier to tap, especially when the row contains longer text or media.
If you use an icon in the heading or button, keep it simple and consistent. For icon formatting help, see Icons.
Imagery settings
Section titled “Imagery settings”This group lets you add optional visual media to the row. You can place imagery above or below the text depending on whether the visual should introduce the topic or support it after the written content.
An image is usually the best fit for short informational rows. Video is more effective when the content needs a demonstration, motion, or a stronger visual explanation.
Video options
Section titled “Video options”You can use a hosted video or a supported video service URL. If you use hosted video, adding a poster image usually creates a cleaner first impression before playback starts.
Autoplay can make the row feel more dynamic, but it works best with short videos that still make sense without sound. Looping can suit ambient or demonstration clips, while player controls are better when visitors may want to pause, replay, or scrub through the video.
For video setup guidance, see Using video.
Aspect ratio
Section titled “Aspect ratio”Aspect ratio settings help media stay visually consistent across multiple rows. Use a shared ratio when you want the accordion to feel tidy, and use the default ratio when preserving the original media shape matters more than uniformity.
The mobile aspect ratio is useful when a desktop crop does not translate well to smaller screens. This is especially helpful for portrait media or visuals with important details near the edges.
Standard block settings
Section titled “Standard block settings”Visibility settings
Section titled “Visibility settings”Visibility settings control whether this block appears on desktop, mobile, or both. This is most useful when you want a simpler mobile accordion or different content emphasis by device.
For details, see Visibility settings.
Usage notes
Section titled “Usage notes”- Write clear headings. Make each row heading specific enough that visitors can decide whether to expand it.
- Pick one primary content method. Use linked content for reuse and centralized updates, or manual rich text for tighter control inside the block.
- Use media with purpose. Add images or video only when they help explain the row, not just to make the accordion look fuller.
- Keep actions focused. If you add a button, make sure its destination adds value beyond simply opening the row content.
- Check both viewports. Review desktop and mobile separately so alignment, visibility, and media crops still work as expected on each screen size.
- Confirm fallback styling. Leave blank or default-style values in place when you want the row to blend with the surrounding accordion; use explicit colors or media choices when you want the block to stand out more independently.
