Menus help customers browse your store and find products, important pages, policies, and contact information. In your Company XYZ Align theme, plan navigation around the paths customers use most, then use Align theme settings to choose where each menu appears.
Manage links and menus from the Navigation page in your Shopify admin. Menu placement and presentation vary by theme; review your Theme settings when configuring Align.
Default menus
Section titled “Default menus”Your store includes two default menus that can appear across the site: the main menu and footer menu. You can add, remove, or edit menu items in either menu.
Main menu
Section titled “Main menu”The main menu typically appears in the header, either across the page or in a sidebar. Use it for key shopping destinations and essential business information, such as an About us page.
By default, it includes:
- Home — Your store’s main page
- Catalog — A page showing all products
You can add a drop-down menu beneath a main-menu item. Dropdowns help group related collections, products, pages, blog posts, or policies without overwhelming the header.
Footer menu
Section titled “Footer menu”The footer menu usually appears across the bottom of each page. It is a useful place for store policies, contact details, and other supporting information.
Other menus
Section titled “Other menus”Depending on your Align theme settings, the Header settings may let you add another menu. If your theme does not offer this option, you can customize your theme code or work with a Shopify Partner. Learn more about hiring a Shopify Partner
Add menu items
Section titled “Add menu items”Menu items can link to pages, collections, products, blogs and blog posts, store policies, external websites, or email addresses. In most cases, create the destination first—for example, create a collection before linking to it in a menu.
-
From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Navigation
-
Select the menu you want to edit.
-
Select Add menu item.
-
Enter the menu item’s name. This is the text customers see and can include special characters or emoji.
-
Select the Link field, then enter an external URL or choose a destination type:
- Home
- Collections
- Products
- Pages
- Blogs
- Blog posts
- Policies — Choose from your store policies
-
Select the specific destination when needed. Home automatically links to your store’s home page.
-
If you link to a collection or all collections, you can filter it by tags so only products matching every entered tag appear.
-
Select Add, then select Save menu.
To create an email link, enter it in the format mailto:youremail@example.com.
If you delete a resource used in navigation, its linked menu item is also deleted. For example, deleting a collection also removes any menu item that links to it.

- Select the menu that contains the item.
- In Menu items, select Edit beside the item.

- Use the footer for support. Place policies and contact information where customers can find them without crowding the header.
- Save regularly. Save menu changes often, especially during larger navigation updates.
